The film tells the life story of Leonie Gilmour, who meets the Japanese poet Yone Noguchi at the turn of the 20th century in New York. When tension towards the Japanese rises in America during the Russian-Japanese war, she follows Yone back to Japan. But there too, she collides with the boundaries of socially accepted life. Leonie Gilmour, mother of the landscape designer and sculptor Isamu Noguchi, is portrayed as a strong-willed and independent woman, who always chooses her own direction.
